Let’s start with Killeen. I enlisted Don to do some research for me while he was in Killeen. The restaurant / cafeteria in Seton Hospital is supposed to have a great chef. Since Don was working in Killeen, I thought it might be a good time to check it out. He was pretty impressed, even though he didn’t manage to eat lunch until 3pm. He said for about $3.00, he had a great grilled sandwich, and even took pictures (below)! He said it’s was worth going back again. I think they serve dinner too.
I, on the other hand, went to Austin. Really, why not? Got all my usual errands done, but in addition, checked out a new place on South Lamar called Mockingbird Domestics. They carry some of the work of Petrified Designs (I’ve mentioned them in a previous post). The shop is really interesting, and certainly has a lot of unique pieces from local artists. There were a few things I found irresistible and very affordable, like the succulent planters and the textiles. There were fabulous alpaca throws and some handwoven kitchen towels and runners.
After that stop we went to check out People’s Rx on Lamar across from Central Market. We didn’t eat there because there aren’t tables inside. So we just checked out the deli. It smelled wonderful and I was tempted to get the chili made from grass fed beef – next time. Their food is very high quality, using organic, grass fed, etc. They also have a case where they sell grass fed meat.
We ended up eating at 34th St Cafe, and it was good, but not exceptional. I had a salad with grilled salmon, goat cheese, and pecans. If you’re with someone you don’t care to talk to much, this is the place for you, because the acoustics keep it noisy.
