Author: Lanie Fioretti

My name is Lanie Fioretti and although I am not a classically trained chef or a degreed nutritionist, I have been studying food and nutrition voraciously since the early seventies. After working in public health and private practice for 22 years, I retired my dental hygiene license. I have taught cooking classes at Whole Foods and Central Market, done product development for a bakery in east Texas, catered, and been a personal chef. I usually think of myself as an improvisational cook!

Snake Control

Posted on June 26, 2016October 4, 2020 by Lanie Fioretti

Never underestimate the power of cheap wildlife netting.  It’s the same type of netting we use on tomatoes.  After covering all the plants that the deer find irresistible, we noticed that our resident rat snakes get tangled in it, and eventually die.  Most of the year I don’t mind rat snakes living here, because they…

Thai Food – Belton

I’m experimenting with sprouting some of my pantry staples, to create new flavors, and increase the food value.  My first two attempts turned out really well.  First, I sprouted dried chickpeas, then cooked them like I normally would.  For sprouting instructions, refer to the Indoor Gardening with Sprouts post. Next I worked with brown rice….

Find Your Way With Vegetables

Posted on June 12, 2016October 4, 2020 by Lanie Fioretti

White Diakon (miyashige) is most commonly found for sale at farmers markets, Asian grocery stores, and upscale grocery stores.  It’s great raw and shredded or in marinated salads, but recently I read how beneficial it is in the garden, so it will become one of my regulars along with beans and legumes.   Click here, for…

The Good Life Cafe, Temple

Posted on June 11, 2016October 4, 2020 by Lanie Fioretti

Light, delicious, fast, reasonable – what’s not to love about this unassuming Temple cafe.  They do have lots of coffee drinks, which we didn’t have.  But we did have a Greek salad, and a turkey sandwich on their homemade bread.  The Good Life Cafe menu consists of soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts. Of all the…
