Author: Lanie Fioretti

My name is Lanie Fioretti and although I am not a classically trained chef or a degreed nutritionist, I have been studying food and nutrition voraciously since the early seventies. After working in public health and private practice for 22 years, I retired my dental hygiene license. I have taught cooking classes at Whole Foods and Central Market, done product development for a bakery in east Texas, catered, and been a personal chef. I usually think of myself as an improvisational cook!

The walls of the…

Rice and Arsenic

Posted on August 21, 2015 by Lanie Fioretti

One of the sites that I follow had a good article on rice and rice products (e.g. cereal, pasta, bread, and rice milk) and arsenic – which regions are the best and the worst, what health risks it poses, and how to lower the level of arsenic in the rice you buy.  To read…

Butchart Gardens

Posted on August 18, 2015September 21, 2016 by Lanie Fioretti

We took a ferry to Vancouver Island, from Vancouver, and spent 3 days in an Airbnb apartment in Chinatown in Victoria.  The first time we visited Victoria, B.C., we didn’t go to Butchart Gardens, so this time, we were really looking forward to it.  We even took a boat ride in the harbor by the…
