Beneficial Unintended Consequences

Posted on June 9, 2018October 6, 2020 by Lanie Fioretti

Sometimes I stumble onto something that has more beneficial unintended consequences than I could’ve imagined.  Recently, I posted the formula for the best Insect Spray for Organic Gardening that I’ve used.  Well, as it turns out, the deer hate it too!  As long as I spray after it rains, the deer don’t seem to eat anything that has this neem/soap residue on it.

In case you didn’t see the post from two years ago, Snake Control, I want to talk about it again.  If you raise chickens or want to keep your birdhouses safe, never underestimate the power of wildlife netting.  Surprisingly, snakes don’t bother me as much as spiders.  I actually like rat snakes for rodent control.  However, when they mess with our purple martins, we get mean.  Because, we surround anything the deer like to eat with netting, we unintentionally learned it stops snakes.  Not only is it an effective control for snakes, but it’s readily available at Tractor Supply and Lowe’s for around $20 for a 100′ x 7′ roll.   Yes, you may lose a lizard or two, but still worth not losing your greenery.

Just an aside about spiders – yes, I know they can be beneficial, but they are very creepy.  Spiders have too many eyes, and many jump.  And I can’t talk about them anymore, ewwww.
