Deer Meat Stew (Slow Cooker)

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Yield: Serves 6-8

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs deer round steak
  • Granulated garlic powder
  • Salt
  • 4 slices bacon, cut in small pieces
  • 2 TBSP butter
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 4 TBSP flour
  • 1/2 cup wine
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 white potato, small cubed
  • 1 sweet potato, small cubed
  • 2 ribs celery with leaves, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 3-4 cups chopped cabbage
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen peas

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle the round steaks with garlic powder and salt and massage well into meat on both sides. You are working to breakdown the tissue to tenderize it. Set aside.
  2. Cook bacon in a skillet until crisp, remove and place in slow cooker.
  3. If there is not 4 TBSP of fat in the pan, add butter to make up the difference.
  4. Add onion and garlic. Cook a couple minutes and stir in flour. Stir in wine and broth to make a sauce. Pour into slow cooker.
  5. Add the rest of the ingredients, except the peas to the slow cooker.
  6. Cut the steaks into small bite size pieces and add them.
  7. Stir everything together well. Add a little salt and pepper if you need to, and extra broth, if you don't have enough.
  8. Cover and cook on low 6-8 hours until everything is tender.
  9. In the last 1/2 hour add peas.
  10. Serve with cornbread or biscuits.
