Deer Meat Stew (Slow Cooker)
Ingredients
- 2 lbs deer round steak
- Granulated garlic powder
- Salt
- 4 slices bacon, cut in small pieces
- 2 TBSP butter
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 4 TBSP flour
- 1/2 cup wine
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 white potato, small cubed
- 1 sweet potato, small cubed
- 2 ribs celery with leaves, chopped
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 3-4 cups chopped cabbage
- 1 1/2 cups frozen peas
Instructions
- Sprinkle the round steaks with garlic powder and salt and massage well into meat on both sides. You are working to breakdown the tissue to tenderize it. Set aside.
- Cook bacon in a skillet until crisp, remove and place in slow cooker.
- If there is not 4 TBSP of fat in the pan, add butter to make up the difference.
- Add onion and garlic. Cook a couple minutes and stir in flour. Stir in wine and broth to make a sauce. Pour into slow cooker.
- Add the rest of the ingredients, except the peas to the slow cooker.
- Cut the steaks into small bite size pieces and add them.
- Stir everything together well. Add a little salt and pepper if you need to, and extra broth, if you don't have enough.
- Cover and cook on low 6-8 hours until everything is tender.
- In the last 1/2 hour add peas.
- Serve with cornbread or biscuits.
