I decided to plant some small pots of tomato seeds and eggplant seeds, and put them in my nursery area. For eggplant, there’s two varieties of Italian long purple and one Asian long purple. For tomatoes, I’m starting Mexican midget, green grape, and Plainsman. I found Plainsman on line, and it’s a Texas heritage tomato. I added a little crushed granite to each of the pots. Plants apparently love the mineral content of granite. My plan is to get a load delivered and add it to all the beds. After seeing how easily everything seeds in our crushed granite walkways, and after talking to my friends at Organic Plus Nursery, I’m convinced it’s a great addition to improve the health of plants. I know it seems like a lot of work, but I figure that I’ll get really good exercise, and some great quality food.
In addition to the small pots, I direct seeded some Asian mustard greens and some golden beets. From last weeks’ planting, I noticed the kale is up already, and all the onions seem to be holding their own. The rain was perfect to get everything going. The little bit of lettuce that’s growing, really perked up. Any new starts got a little sprinkling of diatomaceous earth. All the beds and my garden got a sprinkling of molasses. Next week, I’ll have to work on Don’s garden. I was really glad to see ladybugs already.
