And now for the continuing saga of the greenhouse. I was all excited when I did the last post, and the picture of it was pretty impressive, but right after that, we had 30 mph winds. You can see where I’m going with this! I came home from the store, and it looked like a humongous sail, flapping in the breeze. That wasn’t too bad, except that Don had put up a short barbed wire fence to keep the cows out, while we were building it, and that brand new heavy plastic was getting shredded. Armed with nothing but my muscle power, shear will, and a lot of screaming at the wind and plastic (which obviously only helped keep me from crying, and I’m hoping the neighbors didn’t hear!), I finally wrestled it to the ground, and threw cement blocks on it. On to plan B!
First that short barbed wire fence came down. Then on Christmas day, with the help of a neighbor, Don got the plastic secured to the greenhouse. A couple weeks ago, I got it planted (seeds only). Then one day I went out to water and open the window on the storm door entry, only to discover the door had been inadvertently locked. There is no exterior method to unlock one of those doors, and after trying several things, we were resigned to cutting the plastic, sticking a hand in, and unlocking the silly thing, when Don forced the button, broke the lock, and voila, we’re in. Since it gets pretty hot in there, pretty quickly, opening the door, is a little important. When it’s in the high 60s outside, it gets up to 100 in the greenhouse. Don has just finished putting in extra ventilation, so it’s in good shape with that. His next project is an exhaust fan.
At least, we have a lot of veggies already up – Asian greens, kale, spinach, cilantro, lettuce, and carrots so far. Nothing is big enough to harvest yet, but soon. It’ll be nice to have all the veggies we need, in the backyard again.
