‘Tis the season to be running around doing things. In our travels we’ve come across some places you might like to know about.
Last weekend in Austin we went to a restaurant, new to us, Food Heads on 34th. They have excellent sandwiches (and soups and salads). It’s definitely worth the stop when you’re in Austin. Click here for their address, phone, and menu.
I almost forgot about the burger place. This past week I was working in Hillsboro, and we tried to take a one hour lunch break in 30 min. at The Burger Shack in Peoria – that part didn’t work out so well, but the burgers were excellent. This is a little bitty place, in a little bitty town between Hillsboro and Whitney. They have handmade burgers, sauteed onions, grilled buns, and great sauce. They are not fast so make sure you have the time to stop. And skip the fries, they are hand-cut but not cooked hot enough and really greasy. If you want to stop in downtown Hillsboro, across from the courthouse is a good Italian place, Frenkie’s. Click here for their information.
This weekend a couple girlfriends and I took a little outing to Troy and Temple. Troy has a couple new interesting places, and will now be on my list of regular treks. The first stop we made was at The Climbing Rose, 8 East Center, Troy. It’s a very short block and the shop is in the upstairs of an old house. The hours are Tues – Fri 10-6 and Sat 10-2. Nancy is the proprietor and it’s just a really nicely done shop with a little bit of everything, and reasonable prices. Phone number 979-571-6248
And while you’re in Troy, you might as well go out to Greene Acres and buy some fresh tomatoes. Loren Greene has fabulous greenhouses full of tomatoes (and some other vegetables). He sells the tomatoes for 1.25 / lb. We bought at least 10 lbs of ripe and green tomatoes. Jalapenos were 0.60 / lb. By Christmas, he’ll have fresh broccoli. You might want to call ahead 254-760-5737. He’ll give you the “tour” when you go out. From 35 it’s about 7 miles. Exit at #308, Troy, take FM 935 through Belfalls, turn right at CR 459, then turn left at private road 820 (as you’re coming up to PR 820, you’ll see the greenhouses on the hill to the left).
We couldn’t go through Temple without stopping at Megg’s Cafe for lunch. This time I had a pastrami reuben and it was excellent. The three of us decided that the pumpkin spice pancakes would be a great dessert, so we got a short stack for the middle of the table!! The waiter tried to bring little plates for the pancakes after he cleared our lunch dishes, but we had almost finished them before he made it back. I also bought a loaf of day-old wholewheat bread, and it’s very good. For the previous post about Megg’s, click here.
