Mondays aren’t really a good day to go to small towns in central Texas, but my Austin day trip fell through, and I’ve been wanting to go to the new HEB Plus in Belton. It’s really a great store, with a good health food and bulk section, flame broiled chicken that looked and smelled fabulous, and a good outside garden section. Physically the store is much nicer and more spacious than the Hewitt store.
For lunch I didn’t want a full blown meal and decided to go to Jaliscos on Central Ave. It’s across the street and a little west of Schoepf’s BBQ. The salsa was delicious. I got a shrimp taco, a pork taco, and a half order of charro beans. The shrimp and charro beans were great. The pork taco was good, but tasted a little too “barbequey” for me. The menu is extensive and the service was really good. It definitely will be one of my “go to” restaurants. And by the way Schoepf’s BBQ is good barbeque, or at least it was the last time I was there. I’m not sure they actually have a sign up, so look for the rock building near IH35.
In the strip center next to Jaliscos was a thrift store with a lot of pretty interesting stuff. I didn’t buy anything but saw a couple of great Chico items for 4.00 or less. It’s hard to believe but I wasn’t really in a shopping mood! This thrift store and Jaliscos are open 7 days a week.
