We often meet interesting people, when we walk in the park. The other day, a man that looked like he was just taking pictures of the ground, offered an unexpected education about the Texas Star Mushroom. He was an obvious mycophile (mushroom lover!), and was excited to share his information. It’s easy to overlook this unusual mushroom among fall leaves. But there were a number of them in the leaf rubble.
Only five states have state mushrooms. The Texas Star Mushroom is extremely rare, and found only in certain areas of Texas and Japan. In the U.S., it’s commonly referred to Devil’s Cigar, because of its shape as it comes out of the ground, before it opens. While it’s not poisonous, it’s also described as “not very tasty.” For more information visit Fort Worth Botanical Garden, awesome flora, or chorioactis.
