The garden has been tilled, but I never got the cover crop in. I usually plant some type of legume, clover, vetch, etc. Something to fix nitrogen in the soil. We’re rounding up some large black tubs to use this year. Our neighbor garden guys have been sinking them in the ground and planting in them. When you put rich compost / soil in them, they work really well, and any amendments to the soil stay around your plants better.
I’ve been trying to order some seeds from Seeds from Italy, but the USDA is holding up their container in customs. There’s a couple long Italian eggplants I want to try, since my patience with the long Asian eggplant has run out. They grow great for Kathy, but not in our soil for some reason. Then I found a really sweet beet. And I’m determined to try celery root (celeriac) again – different variety. I just love the flavor, and they are so expensive, when you can even find them.
There was only one type of seed I wanted to get from Willhite, and shipping was too much, so I called Coryell Feed in Gatesville, and they’re getting it for me because they carry Willhite seed. They are really nice to do business with, and what a great thing, now I can have the butternut squash I want (small seed cavity).
When I was watching Central Texas Gardener on 1/22, one of the things I came away with is it’s time to put molasses in your garden areas to feed the microbes. Luckily, I got some dry molasses down before the last rain.
Don’s finished the roof extension from the shed, and put in another couple rainwater tanks. I’m pretty happy the last rainfall started filling them. I’ll post some pictures of the project soon. Unfortunately, when it’s drought conditions, no amount of water will help most of the plants, it’s just too stressful for them.
