Author: Lanie Fioretti

My name is Lanie Fioretti and although I am not a classically trained chef or a degreed nutritionist, I have been studying food and nutrition voraciously since the early seventies. After working in public health and private practice for 22 years, I retired my dental hygiene license. I have taught cooking classes at Whole Foods and Central Market, done product development for a bakery in east Texas, catered, and been a personal chef. I usually think of myself as an improvisational cook!

What to Plant February 2013

Posted on February 5, 2013 by Lanie Fioretti

I looked at the Mother Earth planting guide for this area, and here’s what I’ll be planting in February: beets, carrots, collards, mache, radish, sorrel, spinach, lettuce, potatoes, onions, and eggplant.  I’ll be using plenty of fish emulsion, Garrett Juice, and organic fertilizer to help add nitrogen to the soil.  I’d plant arugula, but apparently…

Winter Asian Slaw

Posted on February 4, 2013February 4, 2013 by Lanie Fioretti

This slaw has a fabulous, bright flavor for winter.  Don requested that I add anchovy paste the next time.  That would make it much richer tasting, so it might have to happen! PrintWinter Asian Slaw Total Time: 20 minutes Yield: Serves 4 Ingredients3 small to medium turnips, peeled and shredded (I used the processor) 1…
